Most children ask for toys for their birthday, but not Jonathan! For his 8th birthday he has asked that people to donate building supplies and material to help a special family receive the gift of a new home!

A message from Nathan (Jonathan's Dad)

About 6 weeks before Jonathan's 8th birthday, I asked him what he was thinking about wanting for his birthday. We were in the backyard and one of the things that Jonathan likes to do is to build stuff. And he came with the idea that instead of getting toys and Legos, and things like that, he wanted people to get him construction stuff like nails, screws, concrete, bricks, and wood. When I asked him why, he said, "He wanted to use the materials to help build houses for people who don't have houses." Jonathan says, "It is important for people to have houses so that if there is ever a thunderstorm they won't get hurt. It is important for people to have a place to live and have shelter."

I waited a few weeks and then asked again to make sure that was what he still wanted to do and not just a spur of the moment kind of thing he happened to think about and he said yes. Jonathan says "He already has enough toys and stuff and doesn't need anything more and so helping someone else who doesn't have things I have is more important than just getting more stuff."

I reached out to Wayne at Habitat to see if there was a way that we could partner to see Jonathan's idea of getting construction materials to help someone else have a home and this is the project that has come of it.

Jonathan thought it was great that, "The person who came to talk to me (Wayne) thought it was a good idea too. I hope for my birthday party that my friends can help paint some stuff for the house too. And people don't have to even go to the store they can just donate money which is really easy and gets someone a new house"
